Age Requirements:

Instrumentalists and vocalists up to age 23 at the time of audition (early November). Three age categories for applicants:

  • 1-13 “Prodigy”
  • 14-17 “Artiste”
  • 18-23 “Virtuoso”

Audition Fee:

$75 through the PayPal link on the SCP website. Please use the “donate” button on our website and mark the name of the student in the memo.

Auditions:

AUDITIONS WILL TAKE PLACE ON NOVEMBER 4, 2022.

Once your application is submitted, you will receive instructions on how to schedule your audition time and the location. If there are too many applicants to be scheduled on November 4, 2022, the judges may open scheduling on November 5; please keep both dates open.

Deadline:

VERY IMPORTANT: Your application, the required signature pages, one file with your scanned sheet music, and your PayPal receipt confirmation are due Monday, October 23, 2023, by midnight. The application is an online document that will be completed and submitted online. Please scan and email all other required documents and submit them in a single email to [email protected]. If you do not include everything in your email, your application may be rejected.

Recordings:

All auditions will be recorded; this allows the conductor to check tempos for the winning soloists selected to perform with SoCalPhil to appropriately prepare the orchestra. These audition recordings are not used for any other purpose.

Piano Accompanist

You are required to have a piano accompanist.

Repertoire:

All pieces MUST have symphony orchestrations available. Please make sure that your selections are available with a full orchestral score on IMSLP.org.

Piano and Instrumental:

Choose one movement of a standard concerto (or work with orchestral accompaniment) appropriate for the student’s age/skill level.

Voice:

Choose two selections, one standard aria and one contrasting work with orchestral accompaniment. Musical theater selections are discouraged because they are usually not in the public domain. Please refer to IMSLP.org to determine if your score is available and in the public domain. If it falls within this category, it will be on IMSLP.org.

Rehearsals:

Rehearsals will be held at the Waldorf School of Orange County in Costa Mesa and St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Tustin. The concerts (Friday and Saturday at 7:30) will be performed at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Tustin.
Please be available on Monday evenings at 7:00 pm up to 6 weeks prior to the date of the concert. A Tuesday evening Dress Rehearsal is scheduled for the final concert of the season due to the Memorial Day holiday. More information about scheduling will be provided in the weeks prior to the concert. Absences must be excused in advance, except in case of emergency. Multiple missed rehearsals may result in forfeiture of the privilege of performing with Southern California Philharmonic and scholarships. Children under 18 must be chaperoned by a parent or guardian. Rehearsal schedules will be coordinated through the SCP Concertmaster, Jessica Haddy.

Transportation:

Competition Winners MUST provide their own transportation to and from rehearsals and the concert.

Update on the Young Artist Competition

SoCalPhil received 40 applications from both vocal and instrumental students ranging in age from 5 to 23 years in the 2022-2023 Young Artist Concerto Competition!

The 2023-2024 season marks the 20th anniversary of the SoCalPhil Young Artists Solo Competition. The talented musicians who apply for the SoCalPhil Young Artist Solo Competition, compete in three mediums: vocalists, pianists, and other instrumentalists, and in three age categories: 0-13 Prodigy; 14-17 Artiste; and 18-23 Virtuoso.

Auditions will be held on November 4 and the winners will be announced before the end of November. First-place winners will be scheduled to perform with the SoCalPhil in the three Spring 2024 concerts. Check Upcoming Performances for the dates of these concerts.

Scholarships will be awarded to the winners of the Young Artists competition at the concert. These scholarships are made possible through donations received from our patrons and the SCP musicians. In the past, the scholarship amounts have ranged from $50 to $500 and are determined by the amount of funds we have available each year.

SoCalPhil is happy to announce that the Tustin Area Council for Fine Arts has again sponsored this very important musical event, supporting the scholarships that will be offered this year.

To help enhance our ability to provide scholarships that support the continued study of music by our Young Artists, please donate here. Your donation will help us continue this SoCalPhil tradition every year!
